Do you hate abortion? Do you wish to see it abolished?
You should. It is the great evil of our time. Since 1973 we have murdered over 60 million babies in the United States through abortion. In Texas alone we murdered over 55,000 babies in this manner in 2014. I pray for revival and an end of abortion in our nation and our state every day, and I hope you do too. If you want to better understand why abortion is absolutely evil, and how we should think about it, I highly recommend reading this article in Desiring God by John Piper.
For many ending abortion is merely a wish, a principle by which we stand. Especially in this modern era of social media, it is so easy to have a belief, and even tell others about it. We express our beliefs, our innermost thoughts, then wipe our hands and call it a day. But where is the action?
There is nothing wrong with sharing your beliefs online. Nor would I argue that it is a complete ineffectual, or fruitless endeavor. Who knows if someone may read your words and be encouraged, or have a change of heart?
But, to be sure, this sort of modern declaration is almost useless.
If you want to take action, if you want to make a difference today in the fight against abortion, follow these 3 Easy Steps to End Abortion in Texas in 2019. Essentially you will be reaching out to your state representation to ask them to support HB 896 to Abolish Abortion in Texas (Find out more about this bill here).
Step 1. Identify your Texas State House Representative and State Senator
You wouldn’t believe how powerful your voice is to your State House Representative and State Senator. They want to be reelected, and the volume of correspondence they receive is not that high. Five phone calls or emails may tip the balance in their decision on a given issue. But first you have to find them. Here’s how:
Navigate to https://house.texas.gov/members/find-your-representative/ and fill out the form with your address (example below is a random one, not my own) and click “Find Rep!”

After clicking “Find Rep!” the page below will be displayed. Information for your Texas State Senator and Texas State Representative will be displayed (see highlighted and red circled sections below). Keep this page open for steps 2 and 3!

Step 2. Write an email and/or letter to your Representative and Senator
The capitol and district address information are in place on the page you just visited. You can use those addresses for your letter (example text will be provided in a minute). In order to email your Senator and Representative, just do the following.
First, right-hand click on the underlined name of your Senator and select “open in new tab”:

A new page will open with your Senator’s information, including an option to email them. Click on “E-mail” (circled in blue in red in picture below):

This will open the email form page. Fill out the required sections, as well as the subject and message (see text below image):

Use the following text for the subject and message – Be sure to remove the portions in ALL CAPS and replace with the appropriate, pertinent information. You can use this same information in your physical letter (take note, this is the email/letter for your Senator – the one for your Representative will be slightly different):
Subject: Abolish Abortion in Texas (HB 896)
Message:
Senator INSERT NAME HERE,
Abortion is the great evil of our time. Over 60 million babies have been murdered through abortion in the USA since 1973, and over 55,000 were murdered this way in Texas alone in 2014. There is no excuse for inaction. We can no longer allow this evil to continue unchecked in our neighborhoods, by our schools, across the streets from our churches, and down the block from our civic institutions. We must abolish abortion now.
You may not be convinced personally that abortion is evil. If this is the case, I highly recommend you read this article by the renowned teacher and author, John Piper: https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/we-know-they-are-killing-children-all-of-us-know. In it he tells the truth: We know they are killing children. All of us know.
I am writing to ask you to author a companion bill to the Texas Abolition of Abortion Act (HB 896), or if someone else does first, co-sponsor it. This bill would prohibit all abortion in Texas. It is needed, and it is needed now. Some might give pause, and say, “What about in the case of…”
The vast majority of abortions are not in response to medical issues or rape, yet these scenarios are always brought up to the public as if they are the norm. However, they should still be addressed: There has never been a proven case of a medical necessity for abortion. Not once. There could be cases where early delivery of the baby is required, and that can often be quite risky, but emergency abortions simply are not a thing. They don’t exist. They are never medically necessary. Rape is a tragic evil, but when the product of that rape includes a child, we cannot blame the child. The child is an innocent party, and deserves to be protected. No exceptions.
We know abortion is wrong, we know that it is killing the most defenseless people on the planet. We know what we must do.
Proverbs 24:11-12 – “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?”
James 4:17 – “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”
Abolish abortion today.
Sincerely,

Click “Send Message.”
For your Representative, do the same as above, right-hand clicking on their name to open a new page. You will see a page like the one below. Click on email (circled in red and blue in the below picture):

A contact form will open that looks different from your Senator’s will open. Fill out the required information, and then the Subject and Message (see text below picture):

Use the following text for the subject and message – Be sure to remove the portions in ALL CAPS and replace with the appropriate, pertinent information. You can use this same information in your physical letter (take note, this is the email/letter for your Representative – the one for your Senator was slightly different):

Remember, after you hit “Send Message” on this page, another page will display showing the information you wrote, and you will need to hit “Send Message” again to confirm. If you forget this part for your Representative, the message will not send!
Step 3. Call your Representative and Senator
Using the information from the “Who Represents Me?” page, call the Capitol Phone number of your Representative and your Senator. You can use the below script, or you can ask in your own words if you are comfortable and confident in your knowledge and understanding of the issue.
It is unlikely that you will speak with your Representative or Senator, but they sometimes do answer the phone. If they do, address them as Representative [LAST NAME] or Senator [LAST NAME]. More than likely, you will be speaking to a member of their staff. Whoever you speak with, remain polite and professional.
Script for Senator:
Hello, my name is [INSERT YOUR NAME HERE]. I am a constituent of Senator [INSERT NAME HERE]. I live in [INSERT CITY HERE], Texas. I am calling to ask Senator [INSERT NAME HERE] to author a companion bill to HB 896 to abolish abortion in Texas. Abortion is the great evil of our time and we must fight it. Thank you.
Script for Representative:
Hello, my name is [INSERT YOUR NAME HERE]. I am a constituent of Representative [INSERT NAME HERE]. I live in [INSERT CITY HERE], Texas. I am calling to ask Representative [INSERT NAME HERE] to co-sponsor HB 896 to abolish abortion in Texas. Abortion is the great evil of our time and we must fight it. Thank you.
Most likely whoever you speak with will simply thank you for your call, and that’ll be it. They may ask for contact information such as phone number and address. It is unlikely, but they may also ask questions about your position. If you are not comfortable defending your position on this issue already, I highly recommend doing some research. At the very least, check out the John Piper article I referenced earlier.
And that’s it! Those are the three easy steps!
Though, there is one more for extra credit. Share this article with your friends and family in Texas – whether by tweet, text, Facebook, email, or face-to-face, and encourage them strongly to take these steps. We can no longer afford to rest on our laurels. Remember James 4:17 – “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”
Lastly, pray: Pray for revival and an end of abortion in America, and Texas!
